Lions Roar: Orlando City Dominates D.C. United in 4-1 Home Triumph
ORLANDO, FL – Orlando City SC delivered a resounding 4-1 victory against D.C. United at home on Saturday night, showcasing a potent attacking display that solidified their position as the league’s early scoring leaders. The Lions, playing without their veteran goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, who was on international duty with Peru, saw Javier Otero step up for his first MLS start, facing the daunting task of containing D.C. United’s dynamic striker Christian Benteke.

Otero rose to the challenge, and Orlando City’s offense took care of the rest. The Lions, eager to rebound from a frustrating 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls, came out firing, controlling the game despite having only 45% possession.
The scoring began in the 21st minute when Luis Muriel headed home a pinpoint cross from Alex Freeman. The goal, initiated by a slick through ball from Iván Angulo to Freeman, highlighted Orlando’s attacking fluidity. Just before halftime, Martín Ojeda doubled the lead with a deflected shot, assisted by Angulo’s second assist of the match. The first half ended with Orlando City leading 2-0.
The Lions continued their onslaught after the break. In the 50th minute, Freeman headed in a free kick from Ojeda, extending the lead to 3-0. Six minutes later, Marco Pašalić, who was a constant threat, curled a stunning shot into the top corner, assisted by Ojeda and Muriel. Pašalić’s goal marked his fourth in five games, showcasing his red-hot form.

While Orlando City dominated the match, D.C. United managed a consolation goal in stoppage time. Lukas MacNaughton headed in a flick-on from Benteke, spoiling Otero’s clean sheet.
“It was very important to add three points tonight,” said Head Coach Oscar Pareja. “The result, as well, was a very good performance, and it gives confidence to the players. We felt that everyone is raising their level, and that makes us collectively a stronger team.”
Pareja praised Otero’s performance, noting his positive contribution coming from the academy. “A very good night for us and thanks to all the fans that supported us today. It was great to see,” he added.
Orlando City’s attacking prowess was evident throughout the match, with 19 total shots, 8 of which were on target. The Lions’ defense also managed to keep Benteke in check, constantly surrounding him and limiting his opportunities. Notably, all three of Orlando’s designated players found the back of the net.
Duncan McGuire, who made his season debut after recovering from shoulder surgery, added another positive element to the team’s performance. His return strengthens an already potent Orlando attack, where he has scored 23 goals in the past two seasons.
Orlando City now leads the MLS in scoring, a testament to their offensive firepower. The Lions will look to continue their impressive form next week when they travel west to face the LA Galaxy.
