“Emilia Pérez” Leads 2025 Golden Globe Nominations with 10 Nods
Los Angeles, CA – The nominations for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards were unveiled Monday morning, signaling the beginning of awards season with a mix of bold newcomers and familiar favorites. Announced by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut, the nominations were headlined by Jacques Audiard’s daring musical crime-thriller “Emilia Pérez,” which led all films with ten nods. The Golden Globes ceremony, set to air January 5 on CBS and stream on Paramount+, promises to showcase an especially star-studded slate of nominees this year.
“Emilia Pérez,” a genre-defying tale of a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, dazzled critics and audiences with its inventive storytelling and standout performances from Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez. The film, acquired by Netflix following its lauded Cannes Film Festival debut, is nominated across multiple categories, including Best Film (Musical or Comedy), Best Director, and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for both Saldaña and Gomez.
A Stellar Field of Contenders
Following closely behind “Emilia Pérez” in the nominations count are the postwar drama “The Brutalist” with seven nods and “Conclave,” a papal thriller, with six. Other top contenders include the musical adaptation “Wicked,” which earned five nominations, and the buzzy body-horror satire “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.
In the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, “The Brutalist” faces stiff competition from “Dune: Part Two,” Barry Jenkins’ “Nickel Boys,” and “September 5,” among others. Meanwhile, the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category pits “Emilia Pérez” against the cinematic juggernaut “Wicked,” Luca Guadagnino’s rom-com “Challengers,” and the indie gem “Anora.”Star-Studded Nominees
The Globes have drawn significant attention this year for their glittering roster of nominees, a mix of Hollywood heavyweights and rising stars. Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Craig, Denzel Washington, and Angelina Jolie are all vying for top honors, alongside music icons like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, both nominated for their performances in “Wicked.”
In one of the more polarizing nominations, Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong earned nods for their portrayals of Donald Trump and Roy Cohn in “The Apprentice,” a drama that has sparked heated political discourse.
Netflix Dominates
Continuing its awards dominance, Netflix emerged as the most-nominated studio, earning 13 film nods and 23 in television categories. The streamer’s strong showing highlights its investment in ambitious projects like “Emilia Pérez” and buzzy TV hits like “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building,” both of which are among the top contenders in television.
Golden Globes in Transition
The Globes, now unaffiliated with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association following years of controversy and restructuring, appear to be gaining back industry confidence. This year’s nominations reflect a stronger emphasis on diversity and artistic innovation, bolstered by a slate of films and series that challenge traditional genres and expectations.
Nikki Glaser, set to be the first woman to solo host the ceremony, described the honor as “thrilling” and “terrifying” but promised an evening that will “celebrate the transformative power of storytelling.”
The 2025 Golden Globes will air live on Sunday, January 5, at 8 p.m. ET, offering what promises to be a night of surprises, celebration, and pivotal moments for the year’s most talked-about films and television.
