Minnesota Draws 2-2 With Colorado But Advances in MLS is Back Tournament
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Minnesota United FC played to a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids to advance to the knockout round in the MLS is Back Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Disney World.
In the 19th minute, Colorado striker Kei Kamara took nice pass from Nicolas Benezet and slotted it home at the near post for a 1-0 lead for what was the Rapids’ 1,000th goal in MLS and 28th of Kamara’s MLS career.
Minnesota equalized when Ethan Finlay flicked home a low, driven free kick from Jan Gregus, in the 36th minute.
Finlay’s second goal came after a nifty give-and-go by Gregus sprung Romain Metanire down the right wing. Metanire took the ball to the end line before sending a cross back to Finlay at the top of the 6-yard box. Finlay was able to get his right foot on the ball while falling to the ground, bouncing a shot off the turf and over Rapids goalie William Yarbrough.
Recent substitute Jonathan Lewis tied the score in the 59th minute. He collected a failed Minnesota clearance off a corner kick and unleashed a 17-yard shot that went off the right hand of a diving Miller and into the top left corner of the net.
Minnesota United moves on while the Rapids depart with a 0-2-1 tournament record.
The Loons will play on Tuesday, July 28 vs. Columbus Crew SC at 8 pm.
