Michael Bradley Returns to Roots as Head Coach of New York Red Bulls II
USMNT legend begins new chapter on sidelines where his pro journey first began
Michael Bradley is officially back where it all started.
The New York Red Bulls II announced Thursday that the former USMNT captain and MLS mainstay has been appointed head coach, marking his first professional managerial role. It’s a fitting homecoming for the 37-year-old, who began his playing career with the MetroStars (now the Red Bulls) in 2004 as a 16-year-old prodigy.
“This is a dream opportunity as a young coach,” Bradley said. “I couldn’t be more excited to come back to where my professional playing career began.”
Bradley steps into the role following a decorated 20-year playing career that concluded in October 2023. He most recently served as an assistant coach under his father, Bob Bradley, at Norwegian club Stabæk—a fitting initial foray into coaching given their long-running professional connection with the U.S. national team and Toronto FC.
A Career Worthy of a Touchline Turn
Bradley brings unparalleled experience to the Red Bulls’ MLS NEXT Pro side. Internationally, he amassed 151 caps—third most in USMNT history—and served as captain 44 times. He played in two FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014) and lifted two Concacaf Gold Cups during his tenure.
At the club level, he made a name for himself in Europe with stints in the Netherlands, Germany, England, and Italy before anchoring Toronto FC from 2014 to 2023. He logged 308 appearances and led the team to one of the most dominant MLS seasons ever in 2017, winning both the MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, plus four Canadian Championships.
A Vision for Development
Now, Bradley takes the reins of a developmental squad with ambitions of grooming future first-teamers for the Red Bulls. He replaces Ibrahim Sekagya, who was promoted to the first-team staff.
“We are excited to welcome Michael to the club,” said sporting director Julian de Guzman. “He had an incredible playing career and is one of the greatest American soccer players ever. We see him as a promising coaching talent and look forward to supporting his development as he transitions to a career behind the touchline.”
Bradley’s leadership, tactical awareness, and global football pedigree position him well to mentor a new generation. His first game in charge will be June 21 at Carolina Core FC (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass).
