Julian Gressel Joins Minnesota United After Inter Miami Departure
Minnesota United FC have officially signed veteran midfielder/defender Julian Gressel, the club announced Tuesday. The 31-year-old arrives after being waived by Inter Miami CF and is under contract through the 2026 MLS season, with a club option for 2027.
A Proven MLS Winner
Gressel brings a deep résumé to Minnesota:
-
26 goals and 65 assists in 242 MLS appearances
-
Played for: Atlanta United, D.C. United, Vancouver Whitecaps, Columbus Crew, Inter Miami
-
7 titles, including:
-
2 MLS Cups (2018 with Atlanta, 2023 with Columbus)
-
2024 Supporters’ Shield with Inter Miami
-
Minnesota will be Gressel’s sixth MLS club in a career that began when he was drafted 8th overall in 2017 out of Providence College.
A Versatile Addition
Primarily used as a right wingback or central midfielder, Gressel is known for his precise crossing, tactical intelligence, and work rate. He has also earned 6 caps with the US Men’s National Team, though he grew up in Germany.
Minnesota’s Chief Soccer Officer Khaled El-Ahmad praised the move:
“Julian brings an impressive depth of MLS experience and championship pedigree to Minnesota. He is a proven winner and competitor.”
Why Inter Miami Let Him Go
Despite his strong 2023, Gressel had not made an appearance under new Miami head coach Javier Mascherano this season. He joined Miami in free agency to reunite with former Atlanta coach Tata Martino, but found himself on the outside looking in once the coaching change occurred.
What This Means for Minnesota
Under second-year head coach Eric Ramsay, the Loons currently sit 4th in the Western Conference with a 4W-2L-4D record (16 points). Gressel’s addition adds depth and experience to a team with clear playoff ambitions.
Minnesota now has a seasoned MLS veteran who knows how to win—and who could play a key role as the club looks to climb further up the standings.
