Inter Miami Trades Robert Taylor to Austin FC, Clears Space Ahead of Champions Cup Clash
On MLS deadline day, Inter Miami CF made a significant roster move, trading Finnish forward Robert Taylor to Austin FC in exchange for $750,000 in general allocation money (GAM). The deal, announced Monday, clears cap space and potentially paves the way for a major signing before the transfer window closes.
Taylor, 30, departs after two full seasons in Miami, having joined from Norwegian side SK Brann in 2022. Known for his versatility and work rate, Taylor made 91 appearances and scored 13 goals for the club, including several key contributions during the team’s 2023 run alongside Lionel Messi and Co.
Now he heads to Austin FC, one of the early surprises of the 2025 campaign. Austin sits second in the Western Conference with 16 points from nine matches and will benefit from Taylor’s experience and offensive versatility as they push for a playoff return.
For Miami, this move seems both strategic and timely.
Head coach Javier Mascherano kept it straightforward when asked about the decision:
“The organization thought it was good business for the club. You know how the transfer window works in this league.”
Mascherano also expressed gratitude for Taylor’s professionalism, noting the decision was less about performance and more about business. Teammates echoed the sentiment.
“It’s complicated seeing a teammate leave,” said Fafa Picault. “I met Robert years ago. He’s a good guy and good teammate. But we know how football is.”
What’s Next for Inter Miami?
The trade opens the door for a potential late signing, especially with ongoing rumors linking the club to Kevin De Bruyne and Ángel Di María. With Taylor gone and Julian Gressel also rumored to be on the move, Miami is clearly positioning itself to make room — financially and roster-wise — for a high-profile addition before the window closes.
All of this comes just days before a critical Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal clash with Vancouver Whitecaps, a match Mascherano is calling
“one of the most important games in the history of the club.”
Inter Miami is third in the Eastern Conference and remains undefeated in MLS play this season. With Lionel Messi likely to miss time later this summer due to international duty, reinforcements — especially in attack — are expected.
One thing’s for sure: Miami isn’t done yet.
