Pochettino Takes the Reins
The U.S. Soccer Federation has made a groundbreaking appointment, naming Mauricio Pochettino as the new head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. Pochettino, a seasoned and highly respected manager with a track record of success in Europe, will bring his expertise to lead the USMNT into the upcoming FIFA World Cup on home soil.
U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker conducted a thorough search process before selecting Pochettino.“Mauricio’s proven ability to build cohesive and competitive teams, combined with his passion for player development,makes him the ideal candidate to lead our national team,” Crocker stated. “We’re confident that he will harness the immense potential within our squad and guide us to success on the global stage.”
Pochettino expressed his excitement about joining U.S. Soccer. “The opportunity to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team,in front of passionate fans, is something I couldn’t pass up,” he said. “I see a talented group of players with immense potential, and together, we’ll build something truly special.”
U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone praised Pochettino’s appointment. “His innovative approach to coaching,ability to inspire players, and dedication to developing talent make him a perfect fit,” she said.
JT Batson, U.S. Soccer CEO, echoed Cone’s sentiments. “Mauricio’s deep knowledge of the game, commitment to developing talent, and relentless drive for excellence align perfectly with our goals for the 2026 World Cup,” Batson stated. “He understands the unique potential of this team and country, and we’re thrilled to have him lead us on this journey.”
As part of the transition, Mikey Varas was appointed interim head coach for recent matches against Canada and New Zealand. Varas, a USMNT opponent scout during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has been involved with the team since 2023.
Pochettino brings a wealth of experience from his time in Europe. He began his managerial career with Espanyol in La Liga and made significant impacts at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. At Spurs, he guided the team to their first UEFA Champions League Final in 2019 and consistently achieved top-four finishes in the Premier League.
After his successful tenure in England, Pochettino took charge of Paris Saint-Germain, where he won the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions. He also led the team to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.
In addition to his on-field achievements, Pochettino is known for his ability to manage high-profile players and develop young talent. This focus on youth development aligns well with U.S. Soccer’s long-term strategy.
Pochettino’s appointment is supported by a philanthropic leadership gift from Kenneth C. Griffin, Founder and CEO of Citadel. Additional support has been provided by Scott Goodwin and several commercial partners.
Born in Murphy, Argentina, Pochettino had a distinguished playing career as a central defender. He played for clubs such as Newell’s Old Boys, Espanyol, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bordeaux.
Pochettino holds a UEFA Pro License and is fluent in Spanish, French, and English. He will work closely with U.S.Soccer staff to ensure a smooth transition and lay the groundwork for success in the upcoming competitions.
