The match was a tense battle, with both teams generating numerous scoring chances. The deadlock was finally broken in the second half when Mallory Swanson found the net, igniting a frenzy among American fans. This goal was extra special as it marked Swanson’s 100th cap, cementing her place in American soccer history.

The trio of Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Trinity Rodman combined for 10 of the USA’s 12 goals during their six-game Olympic run. Each player netted a crucial goal in the knockout stages, and they collectively contributed five assists, highlighting the team’s rejuvenated attacking force under head coach Emma Hayes.

The match exemplified the program’s resilience and consistent dominance. Despite experiencing setbacks at the FIFA Women’s World Cup on five occasions, the USWNT persevered.

Brazil, led by the legendary Marta, fought tirelessly to equalize but couldn’t penetrate the resolute US defense. The Americans, anchored by a solid backline and exceptional goalkeeping, held firm under relentless pressure. The final whistle erupted in jubilation for the USWNT as they reclaimed their top spot on the Olympic podium.

The US defense tightened as the match progressed, limiting the space Brazil had enjoyed in the first half. Marta’s 89th-minute free kick sailed over the crossbar, and Adriana’s attempt moments later was thwarted by Alyssa Naeher. With ten minutes of stoppage time, Brazil created one final opportunity, but Naeher made a spectacular save to deny Adriana’s header.

Naeher’s heroics continued in the final moments, as she produced another outstanding save to deflect Gabi Portilho’s redirection.

This victory marks a triumphant resurgence for the USWNT, who faced disappointment at the previous World Cup. The team’s performance in Paris has solidified their status as a global powerhouse in women’s soccer. The gold medal win is a testament to the players’ skill, dedication, and the overall growth of women’s sports on the world stage.

As the USWNT celebrates this historic achievement, the world eagerly anticipates their continued dominance and the inspiration they provide to young athletes everywhere.

Twelve months and four days after a Round of 16 exit at the World Cup in Australia, the U.S. added the 2024 Olympic gold medal to their collection, joining the previous triumphs in 1996, 2004, 2008, and 2012. The London gold in 2012 was the only other occasion where the USWNT achieved a perfect 6-0-0 record at the Olympics.
