Orlando City get one in late for a 1-1 tie with Red Bulls

ORLANDO, FL – Orlando City SC (1-3-2, 5 points) rallied late in the game and picked up a point against the New York Red Bulls (3-1-2, 11 points) on Saturday night at Inter & CO Stadium.

The Red Bulls were able to score the first goal in the 21st minute when Lewis Morgan drew a controversial penalty in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Morgan stepped up and took the kick, sneaking a shot past goalkeeper Pedro Gallese to the lower-right corner of the net.

The teams traded chances for most of the game, with Orlando firing off 14 shots compared to the Red Bulls’ 7.

It looked as if Orlando was heading for its 4th loss, but they finally made some magic.

In the 89th minute, Orlando City mounted a late-game attack and found the equalizer. Iván Angulo received a pass deep behind the Red Bulls’ defense and sent a cross into the box that deflected off defender Noah Elie’s foot and found its way into the net.

The match ended in a 1-1 tie.

“I’d describe the game today as a great effort with a poor result. The poor result means we have to settle for the point, but with that performance, that effort, that energy, you might think that things should have ended differently. But they did not. We conceded a penalty from nothing. Other than that, there was a dangerous play by New York in the second half, but I don’t recall any other Red Bull opportunities. We had volume, we had sequences, we had energy, we had many things that can win games. But if you don’t have punch, then it’s not going to happen. So, we need to score goals if we want to win games.”

The Lions will have a weekend off before returning to play on Saturday, April 13, when they travel to Audi Field for a matchup with D.C. United.
