Sounders Clinch Spot in Next Round With 3-0 Win Over Whitecaps
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – The Seattle Sounders had no problem defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 on Sunday night at the MLS is Back Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World.
Seattle had a solid outing as Nicolas Lodeiro and Jordan Morris each had a goal and an assist for them in the match, and Raul Ruidiaz added another in the second-half.
In the 16th minute, a Morris blast caromed off the hand of Vancouver defenseman Jasser Khmiri, prompting a yellow card and a penalty kick.
Lodeiro took the kick in the 16th minute and easily sent the left-footed shot into the lower left corner of the net as Whitecaps goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau went in the other direction.
Morris scored with a solid drive in the box, pushing through the Whitecaps defense for a right heel kick ins the goal. He made it look easy.
In the 51st minute, Ruidiaz put in the third goal off of a corner kick, providing insurance for the Sounders.
The win guarantees Seattle at least one of the spots in the third place matches and moves them closer to the round if 16. They await the result of the Chicago fire’s next match against the Whitecaps on Thursday. Seattle has 4 points in the standings, 1 point above the fire.
Vancouver has yet to win a match in the tournament and is pretty much done. They do have a long shot at making the third place matches if they score several goals in the Chicago match. Vancouver have now conceded five goals unanswered after letting a two-goal lead slip away in a 4-3 loss to San Jose back on Wednesday.
